German Microsoft Executive Thorsten Hübschen, who oversees Microsoft Office development in Germany, spoke at the CeBIT computer show this week and revealed that an updated Office for Mac will land sometime this year. This news was first reported by Computerwoche.de. Microsoft’s latest Office for Mac is version 2011 was released in 2010. Shortly after release, Microsoft disbanded its Mac business and stopped work on the project. A recent reorganization, though, has renewed the company’s enthusiasm in Office for the Mac, with officials within Microsoft speaking to enterprise customers about their level of interest in the OS X product. Hübschen spoke openly about Office for Mac, but he did not discuss Microsoft’s plans for the iPad and iPhone. Sources suggest that Microsoft abandoned the iOS endeavor, but Microsoft journalist Mary Jo Foley said last month that Office for the iPad actually may debut before a touch-enabled version of Office for Microsoft Windows 8.
