Apple patents “transparent texting” technology to let you text when you walk

We have seen several apps and jailbreak tweaks for the iPhone which lets you look at what’s happening in front of you while letting you text at the same time. One such app was discussed last week in our CamText preview. But Apple has now applied for a patent over at the USPTO to a technology very similar to this which will offer “transparent texting” to users. This could mean that a future iteration of iOS could support this feature by default. The technology used in this is very uncomplicated, as it turns on the rear camera of the iPhone and provides a real time feed within the messaging client. This can help users avoid accidents while walking on the street or even have an actual conversation with a user without appearing anti-social. This feature will be enabled courtesy of an on-screen button embedded within supported apps. Transparent screen could also be enabled with other apps which involves text like a web browser or an eBook. It remains to be seen if Apple will implement the feature in iOS 8, its next generation mobile operating system, which is expected to be released late this year. But given Apple’s drive to remain competitive and launch innovative features each year, we will not be completely surprised to see this in the upcoming release of iOS.
