Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt claims Apple’s ownership in 2014 will remain steady in the US, with interest in the iPhone 6 primarily coming from Apple’s existing user base. This prediction was reported by Barron’s and is derived from McCourt’s quarterly survey that looks at smartphone ownership in the US. About half of survey respondents said they were considering an iPhone for their next smartphone purchase, while 44.4% said they had an Android phone on their radar. The percent of survey respondents who owned iPhones declined q/q to 52.3% from a high of 56% in December, but was up from 49.4% a year ago. iPhone share likely to continue to be stable: 49.7% of respondents intend to purchase an iPhone for their next smartphone, which is at the low end of the 50% to 55% range witnessed in our survey since we began in June 2012. McCourt’s survey also points to interest in a big iPhone, with one third of respondents willing to pay more for a large-screened model. 3% of iPhone users would be willing to pay $100 more for a bigger- screened iPhone (up from 26% in our last survey). With speculation that iPhone 6 will have a bigger screen, it will be interesting to see Apple’s pricing choice. Only 6% of Android owners in the survey expressed interest in a larger iPhone, suggesting a 4.7-inch iPhone may not lead to a mass defection of Android owners to the iPhone platform as some have predicted. Do you plan on buying an iPhone this fall? Would you pay more for a larger model? Continue reading
