Apple may launch streaming music service, bring iTunes app to Android

Apple reportedly is looking to boost its lagging music sales by adding an on-demand streaming radio service that would compete with Spotify, Rdio and Beats Audio. The company is allegedly talking to senior music label executives about this endeavor, reports Billboard who cites as its source three people familiar with the talks. Apple launched iTunes Radio alongside iOS 7 late last year. The service mirrors Pandora by allowing users to listen to music based on channels that they create. This new service would expand beyond this radio channel-style playback and move the company to an in-demand service that lets users create playlists and listen to any song in the service’s library. “They are feeling out some people at labels on thoughts about transitioning its customers from iTunes proper to a streaming service,” says one major label source. “So when you buy a song for $1.29, and you put it in your library, iTunes might send an e-mail pointing out that for a total of, say, $8 a month you can access that song plus all the music in the iTunes store. It’s all in the ‘what if’ stage.” These on-demand services, like Spotify and Rdio, usually require a monthly subscription, though free options are available if a user doesn’t mind limitations on their streaming and advertisements between songs. Billboard also claims Apple may be porting its iTunes app to Android, bringing music, movies and television shows to the competing platform. This would be the first Apple-sanctioned app in the Google Play Store. Several iTunes apps already exists for Android users, but they are created and maintained by third-party developers. Though Apple has not supported Android, Google has embraced iOS bringing official Google apps for Google Play Music, Google Books, Google Play Movies & TV and more. Continue reading
