About half of all mobile phone owners choose to keep their older devices, tossing them in a drawer or handing them down instead of selling them for extra cash, says the “Mobile Mountain Study,” which was conducted by research group OnePoll, for resale site SellCell. These unused mobile phones are worth $46 billion, with leftover iPhones accounting for about one-third or $13.4 billion of that total. Most (40%) of the people who keep their phones are saving their older phone as a backup or don’t know what to do with them (36%), keeping them instead of trying to find a way to recycle or sell them. Other people (20%) give them away to friends or family members. An astonishingly high number of people (17%) are too lazy to get rid or them, while some (9%) just throw them away presumably because they are broken. While many users are keeping their phones, an almost equal number are reselling them. According to SellCell, iPhones are the most popular trade-ins with the 16GB iPhone 4s, the 16GB iPhone 4 and the 8GB iPhone 4 taking the top three spots in the US. The resale of handsets is a growing business in the US, with even Apple offering its own Reuse and Recycling program. Under the terms of this program, customers can turn in an old phone and receive a credit that can be applied toward the purchase of a new iPhone. [Via MarketWatch] Continue reading
