Apple released iOS 7.0.6 on February 21 to patch an SSL security flaw in earlier versions of iOS. The software update was installed on 13.3% of iOS devices within 48 hours and on 25.9% within four days. The majority of iOS owners, 42.4%, are running iOS 7.0.4, with a small percentage (13.4%) still running iOS 6. This rapid adoption rate is not surprising given the importance of the security update. This latest version of iOS patched a flaw in the SSL system that made iOS vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. The flaw was revealed to be an extra “goto” command that caused the OS to skip an important SSL authentication step. A malicious hacker on the same wireless network as iOS and OS X users could hijack the data traffic being sent between the Apple devices and the router. Continue reading
