Whole Foods Market now accepting Square payments at select locations

Nationwide grocery chain Whole Foods Market today announced it is accepting Square payments at select locations. This is the first partnership Square has forged with a national grocer and is its second major partnership following its agreement with Starbucks in 2012. According to Whole Foods, Square card readers and Square stands will be used to process payments at sandwich counters, pizzerias and bars for coffee, juice, beer and wine. Stores in Austin, New York City, Florida and the San Francisco Bay Area are already using the Square stand to accept payments. Other Whole Foods venues will offer payments through Square’s Wallet app, which ties into your Square account and allows you to make secure payments via your credit or debit card. Besides processing payments, Square Wallet also lets customers browse virtual shelves, receive discounts and track purchases. “Whole Foods Market and Square share a focus on supporting local sellers and creating amazing shopping experiences,” said Jack Dorsey, co-founder and CEO of Square. “With Square, Whole Foods Market will enable commerce in more parts of their stores with easy, accessible tools that showcase the best of what’s achievable in the service of retailers and customers.” Whole Foods is not the first major retailer to embrace Square for its payment processing. A few years ago Starbucks partnered with Square and rolled out support for Square Wallet in its stores nationwide.
