Apple is rumored to soon update the Apple TV lineup with an updated version, and evidence of this new hardware has been found in a public iOS 7 build. Specifically, references of the next-generation Apple TV appeared in an AirPlay related file in the form of “AppleTV4,1.” The current generation Apple TV is internally referred to as “AppleTV3,2,” the model introduced in 2012 is referred to as “AppleTV3,1” and “AppleTV2,1” refers to the model released in 2010. A bump from 3 to 4 indicates a major refresh, in line with previous rumors that claimed the new Apple TV would have a “revamped OS” capable of running its own apps and games. Current builds of iOS 7 for the Apple TV in fact include references to the Game Controller framework, but it’s not clear if these are remnants from other iOS devices, or an indication of support for MFi Game Controllers. While the reference to “AppleTV4,1” confirms that the next-generation Apple TV is in development, there’s no indication of when it’ll be released. A report from January claims that the update could come as soon as next month. [via 9to5Mac] Continue reading
