Apple sold more Macs and iOS devices in the Holiday Quarter than Windows PCs

Microsoft was quite late in jumping on the mobile bandwagon, and that has caused a lot of problems for the company. In the holiday quarter, Apple sold more Macs, iPhones and iPads than PC manufacturers sold Windows PCs, highlighting how Microsoft has missed out on the growth in the smartphone and tablet market. If the number of Windows Phones units sold are included, the Windows computers sold equal are equal to Apple’s sales of iOS and Mac devices. The slow growth should be quite worrying for Microsoft and PC manufacturers, but what’s further worrying is the shrinking margins in the PC business. MacRumors notes that the average selling price (ASP) across the iPhone, iPad and Mac was $584, while the ASP for PCs was $544. Here’s the chart: Benedict Evans, who made the observation writes: A symbolic moment, this: in Q4 2013 the number of computers* sold by Apple was larger than the number of Windows PC sold globally. If you add Windows Phone to the mix they’re more or less exactly equal. This is a pretty good illustration of the scale of mobile: Apple limits itself only to the high end of the mobile market but still sells more units than the whole PC industry. Steve Jobs famously said that the future is a “Post-PC” world where most people would find smartphones and tablets more than enough for their computing needs. The decline of the PC market corroborates these views, and Microsoft doesn’t seem to be positioned very well for the future. Let us know what you think about the chart in the comments below.
