Apple files patents for improved autocorrect, and automatic language detection for keyboard

The USPTO today published a pair of Apple patent applications aimed at improving the text input methods in iOS, specifically within the Messages app. The first patent is about the infamous autocorrect system on every iPhone, that intends to correct your typos, but on some occasions, ends up causing embarrassing errors. The patent details a method, where you’d be asked to review autocorrected words after you send a message. In the review screen, you can edit the autocorrected words, replace them with alternate suggestions, and finally send the message: The second patent details a useful feature for people who converse in multiple languages. In a message thread, iOS will automatically detect the language, and accordingly show the keyboard in that language. This would free the user from switching between different keyboard based on who he or she is replying to. Both patents were filed in 2012, suggesting that Apple has been working on these two improvements since quite sometime, but they’ve not been added to iOS.
