Verizon activates 8.8 Million smartphones in 4Q 2013, but doesn’t reveal iPhone activations

Verizon Communications today announced its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2013, posting strong numbers including a profit of $7.9 billion, revenues of $31.07 billion, and 8.8 million smartphone activations. The company however didn’t breakdown its smartphone activation numbers by platform as it had in the previous quarters. iPhone activations on various carriers are a good way to estimate the total sales during a quarter, but this time we’ll have to wait until Apple’s financial results, which will be out on the 27th of this month. Verizon’s total subscriber count now stands at 102.8 million, with 1.7 million new customers added in the past quarter. The 8.8 million smartphone activations account for 88.9 percent of the total activations, up by 3.5 percent from last quarter. The carrier however saw smartphone activations go down 10 percent from last year’s 9.8 million smartphones. In its press release, Verizon also touted its 4G LTE network, which is now available to 305 million people in more than 500 markets across the US.
