Upcoming Chrome for iOS update could reduce your data usage by half

To reduce your data consumption while you’re on-the-go, Google is adding a new feature to Chrome for iOS that compresses data and reduces usage by up to 50 percent. From the Chrome blog: Chrome’s data compression and bandwidth management can reduce data usage by up to 50% while browsing the web on Chrome for Android and iOS. This feature also enables Chrome’s Safe Browsing technology which helps protect you from malicious webpages. To start saving data and turn on an even more secure browsing experience, visit “Settings” > “Bandwidth management” > “Reduce data usage.” Then simply turn the toggle to “On.” From this menu, you’ll also be able to track how much bandwidth you save each month as you browse on Chrome. The feature works much like Opera or Onavo, where your traffic is routed through servers sitting between you and the website, that perform the required data compression and then deliver the content to you. Of course, all your browsing activity (excluding HTTPS and incognito) goes through a third-party, which may or may not be an acceptable trade-off for you. Another feature that Google will be adding to the upcoming release of Chrome for iOS is auto-translate, that will let you translate webpages in foreign languages with just one tap.
