Rumor: iPad mini delayed due to screen issues

Not buying the new iPad Air because you’d rather wait for the retina iPad mini instead? Well, we’ve got some bad news for you. According to the Korean supply chain website ET News, it looks like Apple is having some issues securing enough panels for the second generation smaller iPad. Sharp is called out in particular. Their IGZO technology, which is apparently in the iPad Air, just doesn’t scale to such ultra high pixel densities. The issue Sharp’s panels are facing is called “burn-in”, whereby whatever you’re looking at gets engraved into the display. Should you freak out and run around like a chicken without a head? No, it’s just a gadget after all, but supposedly Apple is already on the phone with Samsung to help them solve the problem. Samsung is scheduled to start supplying the iPad mini with retina displays starting in 2014, but that might be changed because they, along with LG, seem to be the only companies that can make 7.9 inch displays with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels. We say you shouldn’t worry because Apple wouldn’t ship bad products. If they had to delay something for a month or two, then so be it. Remember how the white iPhone 4 was delayed by something like half a year? While that’s obviously a lot of time, we do know both LG and Samsung are manufacturing the displays Apple needs, it’s just a question of how many and when. This writer was personally looking forward to buying the retina mini, but after playing with the iPad Air, he’s fallen in love with the product, though in the end he’s decided to wait until the rumored larger “iPad Pro”.
