When Apple launched the much-awaited Mac Pro, it boasted that the desktop could support up to three 4K displays at once, but it didn’t seem to have its own line of Cinema Displays ready with 4K capabilities. This could change soon, as AU Optronics has introduced new 27-inch and 320inch 4K display panels. From MacRumors: Both panel sizes offer 4K resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, which could use the new Thunderbolt 2 connectivity standard to support either much larger desktops than with the 2560 x 1440 resolution of the current Apple Thunderbolt Display or high-quality “Retina” sharpness at an equivalent of 1920 x 1080. The panel use the same signalling standard that Apple supports, further indicating that these displays would be a good fit for a future Apple Retina Display. AUO’s panels are already in production, but mass production isn’t scheduled until Q1 of next year, so it’s quite possible that Apple’s Retina Displays won’t be available in December, which is when the Mac Pro goes on sale. MacRumors also notes that instead of adopting a 16:9 3840 x 2610 resolution of its displays, Apple could choose the wider 4096 x 2160 resolution, possibly targeted at professionals, many of whom are from the film industry.
