When it was discovered that America’s government has been spying on Germany for the past decade, people rightly freaked out and got upset. This isn’t a political website, so we’re not going to argue about what’s right or wrong, but we will say this: German politicians now want to make sure their communications are safe. That means getting everyone in power to use an encrypted phone. That also means iPhones are now banned since they don’t support the encryption software that’s Germany’s intelligence agency has developed. Should Apple be upset by this decision? They’re probably not very happy about it, obviously, but there are only so many politicians versus the ever increasing number of people interested in buying a smartphone. Can Apple make their smartphones more secure? Again, the answer is yes, but it’s not going to be as secure as the special software that Germany’s most elite hackers get paid to write. What should iOS users trying to be secure do to maintain privacy? We’re sorry to break it to you, but the very act of owning a mobile phone is leaking data about where you are and when. If you’re having conversations that are so secret and so important that the contents can cause serious harm to a nation’s future, then you should probably have said conversation face to face in a soundproof bunker that only few people know exists.
