FiftyThree, developers of iPad app Paper, launch new Bluetooth stylus “Pencil”

While Steve Jobs wasn’t a big fan of the stylus, there is a sizeable portion of iPad users who want a stylus for using the iPad as a creation device. FiftyThree, the makers of the popular iPad drawing app Paper, figured that many of their customers needed or already used a stylus, and have released their own Bluetooth stylus, which is unsurprisingly named “Pencil.” Pencil connects to the iPad via Bluetooth Low Energy, also known as Bluetooth Smart, thus consuming low power. The stylus has the ability to reject palm touches while you’re drawing with the stylus, and has an “eraser” on the opposite end to let you easily erase portions of your drawing without switching tools. The use of the stylus also enables a new “blending” mode, where you can use your finger to smooth rough edges and blend colors. Pencil’s battery can be charged to full off a USB port in 90 minutes, and a single charge lasts for a month of normal use. Its sensors are plated in gold for accurate detection, and the tip is made such that it has minimum friction while drawing on the screen. FiftyThree says that even without a charge, Pencil should work like any other capacitive stylus in any app. Pencil is available in two models, Walnut for $59.95 and Graphite for $49.95. The Walnut model has magnets that lets it stick to the iPad Smart Cover, making it easy to carry the stylus around. You can order the Pencil stylus from here, and learn more about it on FiftyThree’s website. See also: Our review of pressure sensitive iPad stylus Pogo Connect Continue reading
