iOS 7 now installed on 74% of iOS devices according to App Store metrics

iOS certainly has a leg up on Android in the software update department. While only 1.1% of Android users are on the latest version of Android 4.4 KitKat, a whopping 74% of iOS users are running iOS 7.This latest metric is as reliable as it comes since it is pulled directly from Apple. Similar to the Android developer dashboard, Apple has an App Store Distribution page that reveals the iOS version breakdown. Measurements taken during a 7‑day period ending December 1, 2013 reveal that 74% of iPhone and iPad owners have installed iOS 7, while 22% still have iOS 6 on their devices. A small percentage (4%) are running a version earlier than iOS 6. One reason for this widespread adoption is Apple’s support of older devices. iOS 7 can be installed on all iPhone models from the iPhone 4 and newer and all iPad models except the original iPad. Also, iOS updates are delivered to everyone at the same time regardless of country and carrier. The Steve Jobs of China says the iPhone is the best smartphone available right now

Xiaomi is a tiny Chinese handset maker that prides itself on making highly affordable devices, selling them online, and creating an Android skin called MIUI. Lei Jun, the CEO of Xiaomi, often gets called the Steve Jobs of China because he’s copied both Jobs’ look and the presentation style. And in a recent interview, Jun called the iPhone the best phone on the planet. Wait, what? Why would Jun call the iPhone the best phone you can buy? Easy, he told the press that his company is only three years old, and that one day he hopes for it to be as well liked as Apple. Unlike other Android handset makers like Samsung or HTC, who openly ding Apple and say their alternative experience is better, Jun is taking the opposite approach by saying Apple is the best and that both Xiaomi and Apple have the same goals. It sounds counterintuitive, but this stuff is straight propaganda. Will Xiaomi become as big as Apple? In terms of revenues, no, that’s damn near impossible. But in terms of the actual number of smartphones sold, it’s far too soon to tell. Hugo Barra, the guy who used to be in charge of Android, is now working for Xiaomi. Bluetooth gets updated, say hi to version 4.1

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has just announced that they’ve created a new Bluetooth standard, version 4.1. For those who don’t care about Bluetooth all that much, you should, because devices like smart watches, health trackers, and who knows what sort of sensors that have yet to be invented, will use the technology. Version 4.0 added a low-power mode to help converse battery life, and now with version 4.1, they’re tackling radio interference, connection robustness, and data transfer rates. Starting with the “coexistence” feature, the Bluetooth radio in your next phone will be able to talk to your cellular modem and coordinate data transfers so that neither of the two radios have to fight to be heard. Not only will this further reduce battery usage, since the modems won’t have to amplify their signal as strongly, but it’ll help keep the devices connected to your phone actually stay connected. Which brings me to the next feature, better connections. Sometimes you walk too far away from your Bluetooth speaker or Bluetooth enabled alarm clock. It happens. Instead of waiting for those devices to repair when you’re near them again, Bluetooth 4.1 allows Bluetooth devices to set variable reconnection attempt times. And finally, improved data transfer. While there are now technical specifications about this feature, yet, here’s how the faster data speed is supposed to work. Say you have a sensor that spits out a data point, like your heart rate, every few seconds. Instead of lighting up the sensor to send that data, Bluetooth 4.1 will be able to hold a bunch of data transfer requests, wait until there are enough of them, and then blast them all out in one go. Obama not allowed to use an iPhone for security reasons

US President Barack Obama confirmed on Wednesday that he is not allowed to use an iPhone because of security concerns. Instead the president must use an aging, but secure BlackBerry handset, says a report in Security Week. Speaking to a group of young people who were attending a White house event, Obama confirmed that while his daughters spend a lot of time on their iPhones, he is not allowed to carry one for security reasons. He carries a BlackBerry that he fought hard to keep when he became president. Despite its struggle, BlackBerry remains popular in government circles because of its strong encryption. The White House won’t detail how it goes above and beyond BlackBerry’s encryption to lock down the president’s phone, but it is secure enough that Obama can use if for email with minimal concern that the device will reveal his location or be the target of a hacking attack. A day in the life of a skeuomorphic iPhone is cleverly captured on film

Nobody bothered to tell London-based university students Carrie Bale, Doug Hindson and Jooyoung Ry that skeuomorphism is out and flat design is in. It’s a good thing, too. Otherwise, we would never have seen Skew, a gem of a video created by this trio. The one-minute clip kicks off with the all too familiar wake-up call and ends with the setting of the alarm at the end of the day. It’s a cute look at a typical day in the life of an iPhone and in our life, too. As you can surmise, the video gets it name from “Skeuomorph’, a method of design in which an object is made to resemble another material. Carl Icahn files shareholder proposal to increase Apple’s stock buyback program

You have to give Carl Icahn credit — when he has a cause, he sure is persistent. His latest move to persuade Apple to give more of its cash reserves back to stockholders is perhaps his boldest. Instead of merely talking publicly about his proposal to increase the stock buyback program, Icahn has filed a shareholder proposal that’ll turn up for vote during Apple’s next annual shareholder’s meeting. Icahn’s latest proposal calls for a $50 billion stock buyback program. This is above and beyond the $100 billion share repurchase program that Apple announced earlier this year. Stockholders will be able to vote on this buyback program, but the decision will not force the board to implement this plan. Icahn filed it as a precatory proposal, which means the board is encouraged to adopt the action, but it does not have a binding effect. Speaking to Time, Icahn claims this proposal is not a condemnation of Tim Cook and Apple. He says that “Tim Cook is doing a good job with the business. I think he’s good whether he does what I want or not. But “Apple is not a bank, ” referring to the company’s large stockpile of cash. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling confirmed that Icahn has filed a precatory proposal and issued the following statement: “Earlier this year we more than doubled our capital return program to $100 billion, including the largest share repurchase authorization in history. As part of our regular review process, we are once again actively seeking our shareholders’ input on our program, and as we said in October, the management team and our board are engaged in an ongoing discussion about it which is thoughtful and deliberate. We will announce any changes to our current program in the first part of calendar 2014.” Icahn claims Tim Cook is willing to at listen to what he has to say, but quips that getting Cook to find a slice of time is difficult. Apple to likely use PrimeSense chips in iPhones for identity recognition, indoor maps and more

What Apple intends to do with its recent acquisition of 3D chip maker PrimeSense is turning out to be quite the guessing game. Earlier guesses pointed to a gesture-based TV, but later reports claimed that it was more about indoor-mapping. A new report by TechCrunch says that the main reason Apple acquired PrimeSense was for its mobile chipset that could let iPhones and iPads sense depth, along with the variety of other sensor data. From TechCrunch: Apple could very well be interested in incorporating PrimeSense technology into its TV offerings, in order to recognize gestures for interaction. But when Apple purchases companies it often has both short and long-term goals in mind for their technology. Specifically, we’re hearing from our sources that Apple was likely interested in a new mobile chipset PrimeSense was developing that would eventually be suited for devices like iPhones and iPads. These chips and accompanying sensor and software tech could be used for a variety of purposes like identity recognition and indoor space mapping. The applications of knowing the 3D space around the user are quite wide spread, since it opens a whole new way of interacting with computers, enabling hands-free control, gestures etc. A combination of PrimeSense’s tech along with the onboard sensors like location, camera etc. would enable a lot of useful/cool features, one of which, as described by PrimeSense’s VP, is: “Instead of having to measure my daughter’s height every two weeks, I could just take a picture of her with my smartphone, and it’ll automatically know she’s grown by a few inches based on her profile and previous height.” He offered other potential ideas like a portable gaming device that utilizes motion gestures, a car-docked handset that sounds an alarm when you’re nodding off to sleep mid-drive or simply the ability to scan an object for a 3D printer. A look at Apple’s previous patents reveal that the company already has ambitious plans that would greatly benefit from PrimeSense’s technology: A touchless gesture-based user interface to control and manipulate 3D objects A Lytro-like camera that is aware of depth along with colors Facial recognition, that would benefit from the additional depth information A 3D camera Additionally, apps like Seene already let iPhone users shoot their surroundings in 3D. IDC lowers its tablet forecast for 2013, predicts single-digit growth rate by 2017

Metrics and analysis company IDC is taking a conservative outlook on the tablet market in the coming years. Instead of predicting an ever increasing boom, the company is revising its forecasts slightly down for the next several years. According to a recent report, tablet shipments in 2013 will be slightly less than predicted, dropping down to 221.3 million units from a previous forecast of 227.4 million units. Though overall shipments will increase, the growth rate will slow in 2014 (22%) and will continue to decline into 2017, when tablet growth will only be in the single digits. IDC predicts manufacturers will only ship 386.3 million units in 2017, down from an earlier forecast of 407 million units. Part of this trend away from tablets may be the evolution of large-screened smartphones and market saturation as customers hold onto their tablets for a longer period of time. “In some markets consumers are already making the choice to buy a large smartphone rather than buying a small tablet, and as a result we’ve lowered our long-term forecast,” said Tom Mainelli, Research Director, Tablets. “Meanwhile, in mature markets like the U.S. where tablets have been shipping in large volumes since 2010 and are already well established, we’re less concerned about big phones cannibalizing shipments and more worried about market saturation.” This reasoning about big smartphones makes sense as there is not much difference between a 6-inch smartphone and a 7-inch tablet. Given the choice, customers may choose the slight smaller smartphone to get a all-in-one device. That’s not saying the tablet market is dead. Honda unveils new Display Audio, HondaLink and Siri Eyes Free tech for its 2014 automobiles

Honda is making the connected car even more of a reality with its new Display Audio touchscreen technology that’ll debut in the 2014 Honda Civic and eventually land in the 2015 Fit. The Display Audio interface is a 7-inch in-dash touchscreen display that’ll allow drivers to access audio, phonebook, media and other vehicle information using familiar touchscreen gestures. Honda’s app platform, HondaLink, will take advantage of this touchscreen and will pipe navigation information, social media updates, news and more the touchscreen display. At launch HondaLink will support the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C. Siri Eyes Free will also play nice with the Display Audio interface allowing users to talk to Siri using a “Talk” button on the steering wheel. Display Audio is notable as it is Honda’s first factory installed example of Siri Eyes Free technology. Some Apple Stores start price-matching iPad Air, iPhone 5c

Apple has reportedly starting matching prices of the iPad Air and the iPhone 5c in select Apple retail stores in the US. The price-match started earlier this week, and is live only in certain regions. From 9to5Mac: The price-matching will vary region-to-region, with some markets choosing to not conduct any price-matching at this time. The stores that do support matching, however, will only match up to 10% off. So if your local carrier is offering the iPhone 5c free on-contract, don’t expect to get a free iPhone 5c at an Apple Store. While Apple doesn’t put its own products on discount usually, retailers like Best Buy and Walmart sell iPhones and iPads at discounted prices to lure buyers into their stores, and thus buy more of their products. Notably, during the Thanksgiving/Black Friday weekend, a number of retailers were selling the iPhone 5c for as low as $0 (with a two-year contract). 9to5Mac notes that after its launch, Apple had started price-matching the iPad Air to Walmart’s $479 price, but stopped soon after. It’s not known if or when the company will price-match the supply-constrained iPhone 5s and the Retina iPad mini. Smile releases updated TextExpander app with new snippet storage method

Smile was forced update its popular TextExpander touch snippet app after Apple rejected it for using Reminders as a storage place for saved snippets. The company revised its app and has released the new version that strips away this Reminder functionality. Smile detailed the changes to TextExpander touch in a blog post on its website. The changes are pretty radical — both from a development and a user’s point of view. First, the storage of TextExpander snippets will now have to be handled within third-party apps that wish to integrate with TextExpander touch. Developers can download a new TextExpander touch SDK that details this new way of storing and sharing snippets. All apps that support TextExpander touch will have to be re-written to adapt to this new storage method. “We have come up with an alternative to using Reminders, which will require you to take action to update your snippets and keep them updated. This will have to be done via apps you use with TextExpander integration. There will probably be a “Get Snippet Data” button in the app’s settings, but that depends on how the developer chooses to handle this.” Customers can still use their current snippets that are stored in Reminders, but they will not be able to change these snippets or add new ones. The snippets are frozen in time until third-party apps are updated to support this new snippet SDK. As of the writing of this post, there are no apps in the app store that support this new TextExpander touch SDK. Smile is continuing to maintain its list of compatible apps and will update this list as apps are released with support for the new TouchExpander touch. The company is encouraging its users to contact their favorite third-party apps as ask them to add support for the updated TextExpander touch, but to do so with the realistic expectation that app updates take time, especially during the busy holiday season. Apple kicks off free holiday shipping, publishes shipping deadlines

Apple is gearing up for the big holiday shopping season with a shipping guide for shoppers who want their iPads, iPhones or Macs before December 24, 2013. It is not surprising that the order-by dates for the retina iPad mini and iPad Air are extremely early as these new tablets are very popular. If you want an iPad mini with Retina Display, you need to place your oder by December 5th. The iPad Air is next on the ordering block, with an order-by date of December 9th, followed by the iPhone 5s on December 12th. These dates include both the engraved and non-engraved options. The rest of Apple’s product line gives you some breathing room — allowing you to order as late as December 18 with standard shipping and December 22nd with next day air. Tip: Play YouTube audio even when your iPhone is locked with this simple trick

The perfect solution would let you play audio even after closing the app, but this is still pretty good if you’re a regular user of the YouTube iOS app. YouTube prohibits playing just audio via its API, so it’s unlikely we see an audio-only YouTube app on the App Store, but we do hope tweaks like ProTube and YourTube are updated for iOS 7, once a jailbreak is available. Artist creates unbelievably realistic finger-painting of Morgan Freeman on iPad

Kyle Lambert is an incredibly talented visual artist, who recently posted an amazing video of him making a finger-painting of Morgan Freeman on an iPad. The finger-painting was made on an iPad Air with the $5.99 Procreate app, contains 285,000 brush strokes and took more than 200 hours to make. The level of detail in the painting and its photo-realism is incredible, especially given that Lambert used his fingers, and not a stylus to create it.
