New Tweak MagicBadges Lets You Restyle Notification Badges in iOS 7

A new tweak by the name of MagicBadges was released recently, which allows to restyle the notification badges located on iOS app icons. Among the customization options included are the position of the badge relative to the icon, the color and size of the badge, and the font of the notification number. After you install MagicBadges you’ll notice immediately that all system badges have been changed to be black ovals with white text for the numbers. To change this, you’ll have to head to the Settings app and tap “MagicBadges.” On this page, you’ll find a universal option to enable or disable the tweak, a button to respring your device, and a small gear labeled “General.” As you might expect, all of the tweak’s settings appear when you tap this button. On this page, you’ll see a quick and convenient preview of what an app and its badge will look like after applying your current customizations. This small window also serves as a way to resize the notification badge and reposition it to your liking. Below this are the notification badge color settings. There are three main categories, including “Original,” “Based on Icon,” and “Custom color.” Original will leave your custom badge colored as normal (more on this below), Based on Icon replaces the color with the main color of the icon, and Custom color presents you with RGB sliders to configure the color exactly to your liking. There is a transparency slider for each of these settings. Next you will see a toggle called “Fix size” which allows you to make sure the width of the badge doesn’t grow even as the number of notifications passes 9. This mode does, however, shrink the number to fit within the badge. Below the “Fix size” toggle is the Font option. Here you can tap to find a listing of hundreds of fonts, each of which will work perfectly with MagicBadge. Within this selection menu you’ll find many fonts including Helvetica and the dreaded Comic Sans. Finally, the most important option for the tweak: Badge. This setting shows you a list of badges much like the font list, but instead replaces the background of the badge. In this setting you’ll find a variety of built-in designs including a thought bubble, a bookmark, and a flag. You can even add more to this list by uploading images to /Library/ApplicationSupport/MagicBadges. You can get MagicBadges in Cydia for free, and it’s compatible with all devices running jailbroken iOS 6 and iOS 7. Be sure to check out our video overview of the tweak above, and let us know what you think of MagicBadges in the comments. Continue reading
