Apple’s Former Safari Chief Don Melton shares memories of Steve Jobs

Don Melton is not a renowned Apple figure for most people and you naturally won’t see his name on Steve Jobs’ biography either. But his contributions to the Safari browser and WebKit have been immense. He has been involved with Jobs back since the days of NeXT to what eventually turned into a full time gig over at Apple. Melton says that even though Jobs wasn’t close with him, the memories he had of him were very fond. Melton has now put these to words in a lengthy blog post speaking about his little known working relationship with Jobs. About the character of Steve Jobs, Melton says in his post - “Steve expected excellence. Which is why he so often got it. He knew when something was right, but he didn’t always tell you what he wanted when it wasn’t. And he was very clear when he didn’t like it. Some misinterpreted this behavior as being overly critical, but it was actually time-saving clarity, albeit uncomfortable on occasion” There are several other points and notes worth having a look at which gives us an insight of how Jobs was around his employees. This was originally posted on Jobs’ birthday in The Loop Magazine (iTunes link) back in February, where it was divided into two parts. What we have here is an unhindered and unedited account in its entirety. Make sure you give this post a read to understand how Jobs was perceived by one of Apple’s core employees back during its “renaissance” days. [Via Don Melton] Continue reading
