Amazon to acquire digital comics platform comiXology

comiXology co-founder and CEO David Steinberger announced today that the cloud-based digital comics platform will be joining the Amazon family. comiXology is one of many companies Amazon has acquired, including IMDb, Audible, dpreview and most recently Double Helix Games. comiXology is an online bookstore and publishing tool for digital comic books. It offers over 50,000 comics from indie as well as big-name publishers like Marvel. In 2013, the company added a self-publishing tool that allows individuals to upload and sell their own comic books on the ComiXology store. comiXology also has a Comics app in the iOS App Store. The universal iOS App allows users to purchase and read their digital comics and graphic novels on the go. The title is among the top grossing apps in the App Store and was one of only a few non-games to make it into this coveted Top 20 List. CEO Steinberger assures customers that the service will maintain its identity, despite the merger with retail powerhouse Amazon, ComiXology will retain its identity as an Amazon subsidiary and we’re not anywhere near done “taking comics further.” We are confident that – with Amazon by our side, who shares our desire for innovation and a relentless focus on customers – we’ve only just begun.
