OWC tears down the Mac Pro, confirms removable CPU

The Mac Pro started shipping this week and landed on customer doorsteps as early as Christmas Eve. One company, the popular parts company Other World Computing, got its hands on a new Mac Pro and tore the device down to its screws and rails.OWC documented the tear down in high-resolution photos that detail the innards of the uniquely designed device. Though the analysis was not as detailed as n iFixit teardown that identifies the motherboard chipsets and their manufacturers, the OWC analysis turned up one gem. The company discovered that the Intel Xeon E5 processor in the Mac Pro is removable. According to MacRumors, the four CPUs in the Mac Pro all use the same LGA 2011 socket, making it possible to upgrade them. This allows professional customers to update their machine as their needs changes or as technology advances. This hardware architecture is much different from Apple’s MacBook Pro and Air models, both of which ship with non-upgradeable processors that are soldered to the motherboard.
