Apple-backed Rockstar consortium may sell off some of its patent portfolio

People familiar with the matter claim that members of the Rockstar Consortium are looking to sell some of the patents it acquired from bankrupt communications company Nortel. The group paid $4.5 billion in 2011 for this intellectual property.According to Bloomberg, the consortium, which includes Apple, Microsoft, BlackBerry, Ericsson and Sony, is holding discussions to sell a portion of the Nortel patent portfolio. The group is supposedly offloading some the patents after not finding big-ticket licensees for portions of the intellectual property. The consortium obtained about 4,000 patents from Nortel Networks, which was selling the patents as part of its bankruptcy. The group went head to head with Google and outbid the search company in a highly publicized patent purchase. Rockstar members won’t comment on any impending patent sales.
