Tim Cook to meet with Turkish President to discuss $4B educational iPad deal

Apple CEO Tim Cook is on a short world tour, meeting with leaders and Apple resellers in the UAE. Cook is expected to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gül to discuss the educational purchase of iPads in a deal worth as much as $4B. Details on the topic of conversation between Cook and Gül is not known, but the pair are expected to talk about Turkey’s Faith Project, which would replace the country’s traditional textbooks with the iPad. The initiative would result in the purchase of up to 10.5 million iPads with the option to buy an additional 2.5 million over a 4-year period. The deal could be worth as much as $4 billion to Apple. Cook may also visit Apple’s first retail store in Turkey, which is located in Instanbul’s Zorlu Center and is opening this week. World Wrestling Entertainment Channel coming later this month to Apple TV

A World Wrestling Entertainment representative allegedly confirmed on Facebook that the professional wrestling channel will debut on the Apple TV later this month. The now-deleted post was reported by MacRumors before it was pulled. In response to a fan question about the availability of WWE on Apple TV, the representative confirmed customers would be able to launch the WWE Network app on the Apple TV once the service is available. In order to experience WWE Network on an Apple TV, you must have a second generation or later (black) Apple TV and be a WWE Network subscriber. Once WWE Network is available, you will be able to launch the WWE Netowrk app directly from your Apple TV. Let us know if you have further questions! Thank you. The WWE Network will officially land on iOS starting February 24th in the form of a native app for the iPhone and iPad. A subscription to the network’s programming will cost $9.99 per month will require a minimum 6-month commitment. On the Apple TV, subscriptions will be handled by WWE directly and not via iTunes. Apple offers temporary work around for OS X mail problems

Apple offered a workaround that could help users who are having problems syncing their email with OS X’s Mail app. The document “OS X: New email messages not received until Mail is quit and reopened” was posted today to Apple’s support website.The document addresses a mail retrieval issue that has been plaguing Mail users in the latest version of OS X Mavericks. “For some email providers, new email messages in Mail may only appear to arrive when Mail is first opened,” writes Apple. “No new email arrives until Mail is quit and reopened.” The workaround creates two buttons on Mail’s toolbar that’ll disconnect the user from their mail server and then re-establish a connection to download email messages. To create these button shortcuts, users should do the following: Choose View > Customize Toolbar. Drag the Take All Accounts Offline button to the Toolbar if it is not there already. Drag the Get Mail button to the Toolbar if it is not there already. Click Done When completed, users can tap the Take Offline button, and then click the Check Mail button to download their mail. It’s a workaround that’ll tide users over until a proper fix from Apple is in place. Hopefully, it wont much longer before Apple is able to correct these and other Mail errors reported by users. Google opens up Chromecast SDK, paves way for iOS apps

Google announced today that its Google Cast Software Development kit is now available for developers who want to build Chromecast apps. The SDK will let developers build their apps with an integrated Cast button thats send movies, TV shows and other media to the Chromecast device.Google’s Chromecast was unveiled last summer by Android head Sundar Pichai during a ” Breakfast with Sundar” event. The $35 dongle plugs into a TV’s HDMI port and can accept incoming content from either an Android or an iOS device. The Chromecast supported Netflix, YouTube and Google Play media at launch, and the number of apps has grown slowly over the intervening months. With the debut of the Google Cast SDK, the number of compatible apps is expected to skyrocket. The Chromecast competes against the Apple TV, which supports streaming of content via Air Play. The low price tag of the Chromecast, along with a more robust ecosystem, will make the dongle that much more attractive to OS users. Developer FiftyThree challenges Facebook over use of Paper for its app name

Facebook today launched its news reading app, Paper, but the launch was not without controversy. iOS development company FiftyThree was not pleased with the name of Facebook’s new app and petitioned the social network to change its name. FiftyThree is the company behind the drawing app Paper. Paper is well-known in the App Store and won Apple’s 2012 iPad App of the Year award. It launched long before Facebook’s app, so it’s reasonable for FiftyThree to be upset with Facebook’s choice of an app name. So it came as a surprise when we learned on January 30th with everyone else that Facebook was announcing an app with the same name—Paper. Not only were we confused but so were our customers (twitter) and press (1,2,3,4). Was this the same Paper? Nope. Had FiftyThree been acquired? Definitely not. Then, what’s going on? We reached out to Facebook about the confusion their app was creating, and they apologized for not contacting us sooner. But an earnest apology should come with a remedy. There’s a simple fix here. We think Facebook can apply the same degree of thought they put into the app into building a brand name of their own. An app about stories shouldn’t start with someone else’s story. Facebook should stop using our brand name. FiftyThree can ask Facebook to change its app name, but it likely doesn’t have the grounds to challenge it legally. As pointed out by TechCrunch, FiftyThree registered a trademark for its drawing app, but secured the word mark of “Paper By FiftyThree,” not “Paper.” There also are other apps that use the name Paper, including two that were launch before FiftyThree’s drawing app landed in the app store. In the end, the newspaper analogy implied in the name “Paper” maybe have been too much for Facebook to pass up, even if it means Facebook is treading very closely to the name of Paper by Fifty Three. The streaming options for iPhone owners is limited, only being available to users who are on Verizon Wireless. iPhone iPhone owners have one and only one option for watching the Super Bowl on their smartphone. Due to licensing agreements, the NFL Mobile app is the only app authorized to provide a live stream of the game. The app is available only to Verizon Wireless customers and requires a subscription. iPad iPad owners in the US can fire up the Fox Sports Go app to watch the Super Bowl on their iPad. The stream is available to all iPad owners, regardless of cable provider or wireless provider. Once again, licensing agreements limit the stream to only the iPad version of the Fox Sports Go app. Mac Mac users can point their favorite web browser to the Fox Sports Go website, where coverage of the Super Bowl starts at noon time. Pre-game as well as post-game coverage will be available live to all desktop users.
